It has been the first time I have been introduced and looked at the capabilities in any detail. This has raised lots of questions for me around what the focus should be in science and how do we integrate everything into our programme. Planning shared lessons School visits / secondary teachers speaking about science Check lens links for more reflections. Reflections from workshop 1 through different lens

Having an opportunity to look at and discuss Takaiako has allowed me to think and reflect on my teaching and how well I promote and use these competencies. These competencies have informed our schools inquiry concepts this year. In the future these competence are going to help me develop a bicultural partnership within my learning environment.

Great week down in Wellington. The stay a Tapu Te Ranga Marae was very thought provoking. Has made me really think about the effort I am putting into being culturally responsive. This area has always interested me and I have always felt I should be doing more. I am a strong believe that if learners feel connected and that they belong they will have a far better chance of success in the future. My biggest barrier is to have the confidence to build this and give students the support and guidance they need. I always feel that I might do the wrong thing and offend people or their culture. Listening to Craig over the two days made me think that I need to be a lot braver and take more risks in this area. We ask our students everyday to take risks, but even as an adult I still struggle to take risks because of the fear of failure or offending people. It was good to hear Craig talk about how diverse Maori are. One thing that may seem tapu to one iwi might not be to another. Even if you make...

A Discourse Primer For Science Teachers, by Ambitious Science Teaching This reading made lots of connections to me about how I teach maths. Lots of the strategies I have used before in maths and I think that a lot of teachers could relate to these strategies stated in the reading. It made me think that sometimes when we teach things like science we get hung up on all the knowledge. This leads to teachers just trying to fill their students with all the knowledge they can. Where as all our students have a base of knowledge and it is a matter of using this and building on it by questioning, sharing, exploring and stimulating new thinking. I will be transferring these ideas and strategies into my science teaching. Five practices for orchestrating productive disciplinary discussion. -Anticipating students’ responses (being prepared for what might happen) -Monitoring student responses (watching and listening while they work and talk) -Purposefully selecting student responses for pub...
